Building Proposal
Planning Proposals
We are excited to let you know that two planning applications will soon be submitted for the redevelopment of Castle Hill Primary School. One application will be for the demolition of the existing school buildings and the building of a brand new one at the current Halifax Road site. The second application will be for a temporary school at Centre Vale Park, close to Todmorden Sports Centre, off Ewood Lane. The temporary school will be needed for a period of up to 18 months whilst the new school is being constructed at Halifax Road.
The redevelopment of Castle Hill Primary School is funded by the Department for Education as part of the School Rebuilding Programme. Galliford Try has been selected by the Department for Education to design and build the new school at Halifax Road, and also to deliver the temporary school at Centre Vale Park. There will be no change to staff and pupil numbers as a result of the redevelopment.
The replacement school building at Halifax Road will be a part 2 storey, part 1 storey, stone fronted building with a strong civic presence, in keeping with the local setting. The new building will help to tackle climate change through minimising energy demand and using low carbon and renewable energy solutions.
The temporary school at Centre Vale Park will be a 2 storey temporary building, alongside hard and soft play areas, staff car parking, and a bin store. The site will be accessed by vehicles and pedestrians via the Sports Centre car park on Ewood lane. There will also be pedestrian access from Centre Vale Park. Once the temporary school is no longer required, the site will be cleared and the area will be fully reinstated to its existing grassland use.

Galliford have submitted planning application for the redevelopment of the new permanent school site to Calderdale council and the documents are available to view on their public access planning pages. You will be able to find the application documents using the link below
If you wish, you can make a comment regarding the application under the comments tab. With regards to the temporary school, additional ecological survey work was needed at the proposed temporary school site in the park. This could only take place at a set time in the year (late May) and so this has delayed the planning application for the temporary school site.
Subject to achieving planning permission, the temporary school will be installed in Autumn 2024. The demolition and new build at Halifax Road will then commence in Winter 2024/25.
